ADEC’s Social Support Program offers language specific peer support groups to empower people and families from Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds affected by disability or who are frail, by delivering an inclusive program of informative and recreational activities. We currently have the following groups: Afghan, Arabic, Chinese, Turkish, Vietnamese and Japanese.
Meetings
All groups meet on a monthly basis.
Activities include
- Information sessions
- Memory games
- Art and craft classes
- Excursions to places of interest
- Gentle exercise
- Gardening sessions
Activities are delivered online as well as face to face.
Eligibility
High Needs Groups
- Frail aged and people with disabilities (may use a walking aid e.g. frame etc.)
- Socially isolated
- From a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Background (CALD)
Carer Groups
- Someone who is a carer of a person with a disability/mental health concern
- Socially isolated
- From a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Background (CALD)
- Referral/self-referred who believe that an individual will benefit from the support group
Mental Health & Wellbeing Groups
- People diagnosed as experiencing mental illness who are under the care of a psychiatrist, general medical practitioner, or a mental health worker
- Referral/self-referred who believe that an individual will benefit from the support group
- From a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Background (CALD)
- People on a Voluntary Community Treatment Order (but not people on an Involuntary Community Treatment Order.
The cost of participating in these groups depends on your circumstances, My Aged Care Package, or have mental health concerns or are socially isolated.
