FW: [wwda-discuss] Request for support for people with disabilities affected by the tsunami

Subject: Request for support for people with disabilities affected by the tsunami

Dear members

As you know the tsunami in the Pacific Islands last week has devastated many communities in Samoa and Tonga. APIDS partners, NOLA in Samoa and NATA in Tonga have sent APIDS some information.

NOLA coordinator Faatino has informed us that in Samoa, 304 persons with disabilities live in the highly affected  areas. We only managed to contact few of them on Friday. Yesterday, we have the opportunity to offer some of  them our support. Sadly I'm wordless to explain what the Tsunami has done to the properties most importantly the lives of our people. For our members, most of the people we visited are homeless and have been moved  to live  in  very small houses on high grounds temporarily. Some are fairly  injured. A family of 4 persons with disabilities have lost 4 members already while a male with epilepsy still remains at the national hospital in very critical condition.  At this stage, food, clothes, shelters and water are in real high demand in these areas.

Vai, the NATA coordinator, emailed that in Tonga, we have seven members of NATA  in the island of Niuatoputapu where the tsunami occurred. They are all fine and safe from the tsunami but the situation of their life at the moment is not good like water, food, clothes etc. Most of them they lost their properties and at the moment they all stay at the Primary school compound. We do really want your help for those people with disabilities.

You can make a tax deductible donation by sending a cheque to APIDS Foundation Fund at 49 Rubiton Crt, Gisborne, V 3437 or by using credit card facilities at Our Community http://www.ourcommunity.com.au/apids.

We are continuing correspondence with our partners regarding their specific needs, and will keep you updated.

Thank you for your support
