ADEC is committed to assisting organisations promote the provision of culturally relevant services within disability, aged care and primary health services

ADEC, as a Registered Training Authority, is able to deliver accredited competencies that can be taken individually or as a whole.

ADEC will deliver training that will meet your organisation’s individual needs.

CULTURAL AWARENESS TRAINING

Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and colleagues CHCCS405A
In this unit participants consider the experiences and issues faced by people living in a new environment, examining what is culture; diverse value orientations; myths and misconceptions about disability and barriers to accessing services.

At the completion of this unit participants will have gained an understanding of the cultural awareness required for effective communication and co-operation with persons from diverse cultures.

CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION

In this session you will gain the knowledge to assist people where English is a second language. We will examine the impact of culture on language, the importance of body language, how to engage interpreters effectively and preparation of material for translation.

PLANNING CULTURALLY RELEVANT SERVICES

In this session participants review current service delivery within their agency and develop strategies to promote equal access for people from diverse communities. Tools required to develop and implement plans to improve access within their service are also provided.

At the completion of this workshop the participants will have the skills to work with individuals or groups by being able to provide a range of opportunities to community groups and individuals to participate and design cooperative arrangements for addressing common concerns.

DISABILITY AWARENESS SEMINARS

In 2004 ADEC commenced its DISABILITY AWARENESS SEMINAR series. ADEC is continuing this series into 2005

APRIL
Disability within a Sudanese culture.

Representatives from the South Sudanese community will talk about ways of working with members of the community who have disabilities or are ageing. There will also be an opportunity to taste some traditional South Sudanese food.

Disability within a Greek Culture

Effie Meehan will talk about working with people who have disabilities or are aged in the Greek community. She will relate some of her experiences as a person with a disability in the Greek community.

JUNE
Disability within a Turkish culture.

Halime Duzen works with carers and people with disabilities from the Turkish community. She will talk about the impact of Turkish culture on the attitudes towards disability and aging.

JULY
Culture, disability and aging in the Somalian Community

Members of the Somalian community will give insight into the way aging and disability is perceived in their culture. This discussion will include looking at ways of effectively working with people from their community.

AUGUST
Respite activities for children and adults with disabilities

This workshop will provide an opportunity for workers to share ideas and activities that have been successful in respite situations. Participants will leave this session with many new ideas about activities and outings.

OCTOBER
Managing challenging behaviours

In this workshop participants will receive strategies to identify the triggers of the challenging behaviour and ways to minimize the behaviour.

NOVEMBER
Working effectively with people from Eritrea

Members of the Eritrean community will speak about their culture and the impact of aging and disability.
