The Education Unit

The Education Unit is committed to the principles of equity and access to all services for all people from ethnic communities

The Education Unit at ADEC is committed to:

  • assisting organisations promote the provision of culturally relevant services within disability, child and aged care and primary health services
  • promoting knowledge and information of disability, child and aged care and primary health services within ethnic communities
  • providing education and training to people from ethnic communities to gain the skills required for further education and employment in disability, child and aged care and primary health services.

Promoting the provision of culturally relevant services within disability, child and aged care and primary health services

Cultural Awareness Training

For over 25 years ADEC has promoted the provision of culturally relevant services within disability, aged care and primary health services. ADEC will plan and deliver training in cultural awareness and cultural competence that will meet the needs of individual agencies.

Cultural awareness training encourages participants to examine their own cultures, their reactions to interacting with people from other cultures, and the impact of culture on communication. Barriers to access of services for people from ethnic communities are identified and discussed.

Working Effectively with Interpreters

To assist agencies to provide equitable access to people from non English speaking backgrounds ADEC provides training to workers on how to work effectively with interpreters.

These training sessions provide discussed around

  • when to use an interpreter
  • the role of the interpreter
  • the type of interpreter (family member of professional)

In most sessions participants will have the opportunity to practice using an on site or telephone interpreter.

Working with Children with Special Needs

This three hour workshop gives participants the opportunity to gain an understand of the impact disabilities can have on a person and family. The barriers to accessing disability services for people from ethnic communities will be discussed.

Promoting knowledge and information of disability, child and aged care and primary health services within ethnic communities

Certificate 11 Community Services

ADEC delivers Certificate 11 Community Services to infirm people from ethnic communities of the services available in Australia and provide information on how to access disability, child and aged care and HACC services.

Provide education and training to people from ethnic communities to assist them gain the skills necessary for further education and employment in disability, child and aged care and primary health services.

Certificates in English as a Second Language

ADEC delivers education courses in Certificate 11 ESL Access and Certificate 111 ESL Employment

Certificates in Community Services, Retail and Business

ADEC delivers training at Certificate 11 Level in Community Services, Retail and Business to people from ethnic communities. These courses will provide the participants with the skills and knowledge to advance to further education or seek employment. To maximise learning opportunities these courses are delivered with ESL.

Certificate 1 Business

Funding for this course has been designated to people with disabilities.

AGENCY TRAINING

ADEC is able to deliver Certificate 111 HACC, Certificate 111 Aged Care and Certificate 1V Disability to agencies. Models of delivery can be discussed with the manager of the Education Unit.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Professional development can be delivered in the following areas:

  • Assisting with self medication
  • safe food handling
  • Communicating with people with disabilities
  • Facilitating co-operative behaviour

All professional development needs can be discussed with the manager of the Education Unit.
