ADEC Seminar - Working with Shame, Guilt and Grief: Destigmatising disabilities in ethnic families

On 22nd May 2008, ADEC hosted a seminar titled "Working with Shame, Guilt and Grief: Destigmatising disabilities in ethnic families" led by international guest psychiatrist Dr. Maurizio Andolfi at Richmond Town Hall.
Over 110 professionals and community representatives attended the session. Topics discussed included the impact of migration on ethnic families and how to overcome the feelings of shame and guilt which may occur when there is a disability in the family.
Dr. Andolfi urged each of us to challenge the medical model of treatment which currently focuses on treating diseases rather than people with diseases. He also spoke of the importance of working with the whole family rather than just the person with the disability and their immediate carer.
