Staff and volunteers who work with people with disabilities.

Course Outline

Effective communication is seen as one of the keys to success for people working with people with disabilities. This is a practical session that introduces ways of communicating with people with disabilities with communcation difficulties. Staff and volunteers may feel uncomfortable if they are unable to communicate with a client and clients with communication difficulties may feel disempowered if they are not understood. These situations can increase stress levels.

A diverse range of strategies can be implemented that are both empowering for the client and in reducing stress levels for workers. These include communication dictionaries, chat books, request books and personal preference books. Each participant will take away from this session a communication book they can use in their work setting.

As a courtesy for fellow participants and trainer, please arrive 10 minutes PRIOR to commencement. As evident of participation, you will be required to sign an Attendance Sheet and complete Evaluation Form at the end of the workshop.

A Certificate of Attendance is issued to participants upon successful completion of the workshop. Minumum numbers are required to run.

Cost of workshop is $77.00 (includes GST) per person. All sessions are run from 10 am to 1 pm; specific sessions can be arranged and delivered at the organisation's in-house work site or we can provide the venue. Costs for organisations can be negotiated to meet there needs.
